Lieutenant Colonel<br>Michael J. Harmon

LtCol Harmon is a graduate of Purdue University and was commissioned in December of 1992. Upon completing The Basic School he underwent flight training in NAF Corpus Christi, TX and NAF Whiting Field, FL and earning his wings in June of 1994 and reported to HMT-302 at MCAS Tustin, California for training in the CH-53E Super Stallion.

1stLt Harmon then reported for duty at HMH-461, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing for his first operational tour. While assigned to HMH-461, 1stLt Harmon served as Assistant Training Officer, Logistics Officer and Quality Assurance Officer and deployed in support of several Combined Arms Exercises as well as two Marine Expeditionary Unit deployments with HMM- 261(REIN).  

Returning from his second MEU deployment, Capt Harmon was selected to attend the Army Captain’s Career Course after which he returned to 2d MAW as a Fleet Replacement Squadron instructor with HMT-302, now located at MCAS New River. At HMT-302, Capt Harmon served as the Airframes, then the Quality Assurance Division Officer and then as the Personnel Officer.

Major Harmon next reported to USS IWO JIMA in October 2002 for its maiden deployment as the Air Operations Officer.   While deployed, the IWO JIMA Amphibious Ready Group supported Operation IRAQI FREEDOM/ENDURING FREEDOM (OIF/OEF) as well as a Non-Combatant Evacuation in Liberia. Returning in December of 2003, he then reported to HMH-466, 3d MAW deploying twice in support of OIF.  In 2006, Maj Harmon received orders to Naval Aviation Systems Command, Patuxent MD where he reported for duty as CH-53K Deputy Assistant Program Manager, Systems Engineering then as the Mission Systems Integrated Product Team Lead at PMA 261.

In August of 2008, Lieutenant Colonel, was reassigned to PMA 205 as the H-53 Assistant Program Manager, Training Systems. Departing in 2009, he then reported to MWHS-2, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing as the G-3 Future Operations Officer. In August 2010, he joined the 2d MAW (Forward) staff as the Deputy G-3 deploying in support of OEF 11. Returning from Afghanistan in January 2012, LtCol Harmon was reassigned to VMX-22 as Executive Officer where he is presently serving.

LtCol Harmon holds a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics from Purdue University. He is a graduate of the Army Captains’ Career Course and the Marine Corps Command and Staff College and holds a level three certification in Program Management through the Defense Acquisitions University. He has deployed in support of two Landing Force sixth Fleet deployments as well as four combat deployments supporting Operations GUARDIAN RETRIEVAL, JOINT FORGE, NOBLE OBELISK, IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM. His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal Single Mission and Strike Flight numeral 8, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three stars and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
