Sergeant Major Michael Diggs enlisted in the Marine Corps on January 19, 1984, and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC on September 11, 1984. He completed training on December 7, 1984, and headed to Naval Air Station Millington, TN, for MOS training as an Air Traffic Controller.
In May 1985, after completing his MOS training, he reported to the First Marine Expeditionary Brigade, Kaneohe Bay, HI. He was attached to Marine Air Control Squadron 2 and served as an Air Traffic Controller. During this tour, he was certified as a Tower Watch Supervisor, went on numerous deployments and was meritoriously promoted to Corporal and Sergeant.
In August 1988, he transferred to Third Marine Aircraft Wing, El Toro, CA. He was assigned to Marine Air Traffic Control Squadron 38 where he served as a Tower Watch Supervisor and Air Traffic Control Training NCO. During this tour, he deployed to several locations, to include a 10 month deployment to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He returned to El Toro in June 1991.
In April 1992, he transferred to Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, SC and was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. During this tour, he served as a Crew Chief and Tower Watch Supervisor and was also promoted to Staff Sergeant. He attended the Staff Noncommissioned Officer’s Career Course and finished as a Distinguished Graduate in August 1993.
In December 1994, he reported to Drill Instructor School, finished as a Distinguished Graduate, and was selected as the Leadership Honor Graduate. He was assigned to Delta Company, First Recruit Training Battalion, where he served as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, Series Gunnery Sergeant and Staff Noncommissioned Officer in charge (SNCOIC) of Academics. He completed a successful tour as a Drill Instructor in July 1997.
In July 1997, he transferred to Second Marine Aircraft Wing, Beaufort, SC and was assigned to Marine Air Control Squadron 2 where he served as the Squadron Training and Operations Chief. Shortly after arriving, he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and deployed to several locations to include Twenty-nine Palms, CA, as the Detachment SNCOIC in support of two Combined Arms Exercises (CAX); Vaernes, Norway, in support of Cold Weather Exercise Battle Griffin 1999; Europe, in support of Operation Joint Task Force Noble Anvil; and, Yuma, AZ, in support of two Weapons Training Instruction (WTI) Courses. He also attended the SNCO Advanced Course in 1998 and finished as the Honor Graduate.
In December 2000, he transferred to Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron and served as a Facility Watch Officer, Tower Chief and Tower Watch Supervisor. During this tour, he was selected for promotion to First Sergeant and completed the First Sergeant Course in June 2001.
In November 2001, he reported to Third Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan. He was assigned to the 12th Marine Regiment and served as the Battery First Sergeant for Headquarters Battery, 12th Marine Regiment. During this assignment, he also served as the Director of the 12th Marine Regiment Corporals Leadership Course and completed the Far East Regional First Sergeant/Master Sergeant Seminar.
In November 2002, he transferred to Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, NC. He was assigned to Marine Corps Engineer School where he served as the First Sergeant of Headquarters and Service Company and Utilities Instruction Company. He was selected to his present rank in November 2004.
In February 2005, he reported to Second Marine Aircraft Wing and was appointed as the Sergeant Major of Marine Air Control Squadron 2 on February 23, 2005. In July 2005, he deployed to Western Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While deployed, he served as the Sergeant Major of Marine Air Control Squadron 2 (reinforced), which included Marines and Sailors from Marine Air Control Squadron 1 and Marine Air Control Squadron 24 (Reserve). He returned to Cherry Point in February 2006.
In September 2006, he transferred from Marine Air Control Squadron 2 to Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 2. He was appointed as the Sergeant Major on Oct 3, 2006. The unit deployed to Western Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in March 2007 and returned to Cherry Point in October 2007. Five months later, the unit deployed again to Iraq and returned to Cherry Point in November 2008.
Upon his return to Cherry Point, Sergeant Major Diggs received orders to MCAS New River, and was appointed as the Sergeant Major of VMX-22 on November 18, 2008.
Sergeant Major Diggs has a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree and his personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
