Brigadier General Matthew G. Glavy
Assistant Deputy Commandant for Aviation
Born in Buffalo, NY, Brigadier General Glavy graduated from St. Francis High School in June 1981. He entered the United States Naval Academy in July of 1982 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in May of 1986. He graduated from The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia in March of 1987 and reported to Naval Air Station, Pensacola for training as a naval aviator.
He earned his wings in September of 1988 and reported to HMT-204 for training as a CH46 pilot. He subsequently served in HMM-261(REIN) as the Embark Officer and Weapons and Tactics Instructor where he participated in numerous contingencies in Liberia, the former Yugoslav Republic, and Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
In August 1993, he reported to Marine Corps Combat Development Command for Amphibious Warfare School. In the summer of 1994, prior to checking into his next command, Captain Glavy was selected for duty at Officer Candidate School as a Platoon Commander for two summer series of Senior Platoon Leaders Class Senior Course.
In September of 1994, Captain Glavy reported to HMX-1 where he served as an Operational Test Director and as a White House Liaison Officer. Major Glavy was selected as a Presidential Command Pilot.
In June of 1998, he reported for duty with 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Okinawa, Japan. He subsequently served as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer and Executive Officer for HMM-265(REIN) and completed three rotations as the Aviation Combat Element with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit to include participation in Operation Desert Fox in the Persian Gulf in 1998 and Operation Stabilize in East Timor the following year.
Major Glavy graduated with distinction from United States Marine Corps Command and Staff College with a Masters in Military Studies in June 2002 and reported for duty with Plans, Policy, and Operations of Headquarters, United States Marine Corps.
Lieutenant Colonel Glavy again reported to 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in June 2003. He was the Current Operations Officer in the G-3 and assumed command of HMM-265(REIN) in August 2003. He deployed several times with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard naval amphibious shipping for operations in the Republic of the Philippines, East Timor, and Operation Iraqi Freedom II.
He was selected to attend the Marine Corps War College where he graduated with a master’s degree in strategic studies in June 2006. Lieutenant Colonel Glavy reported for duty with the Joint Staff, J3 and was assigned in Information Operations.
Colonel Glavy was assigned to HMX-1 in September 2008 and assumed command in June 2009. As the President's Helicopter Pilot, he led numeorus detachments throughout the world in support of the White House Military Office. After a successful command he was assigned to HQMC Aviation, Aviation Expeditionary Enablers Branch in July 2011. He is currently the Assistant Deputy Commandant for Aviation on the Marine Corps staff.
His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, the Air Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
